The precursor to Taking Control of your Job Search, our “Choosing Your Job Direction” workshop is designed to help you identify what job opportunities best fit your skills and interests and turn this into a specific job objective.

The course will use a series of participatory activities to teach participants how to:

  • Identify the importance of a job objective in a successful job search.
  • Connect to other job seekers to build a resource network.
  • Discuss your dream jobs and the difference between a job and a career.
  • Describe the role work plays in your lives and additional things that influence your job search.
  • Learn tools for navigating change.
  • Discuss various job assessment ‘tools’ and how they can be used.
  • Identify different kinds of transferrable skills and assess your values to learn how to connect them to developing your job objective.
  • Identify internet resources that can help you identify your job objective.
  • Complete a ‘take home’ research activity to identify two specific job areas that interest you and evaluate whether your skills, abilities, and goals connect to that job.
  • Learn how to set goals.
  • Create a specific action plan to help you move forward in finalizing your job objective.

Participants who take this course need to commit to attend the full two days and complete a 90 minute ‘take home’ activity between the first and second parts.

Our signature 4-day workshop series, “Taking Control of your Job Search” is designed to comprehensively increase your success in seeking out employment and help you build new connections and networks within a peer group of women 50 and older.

Participants will emerge with a strong resume, improved interview skills, creative job search techniques, new connections with other job seekers and an action plan for how to move forward after the workshops end. You will learn how to make your age an asset in your search, have time for practical application of the skills you are learning, and leave the class prepared to seek out, apply for, interview for and negotiate for the position you want.

This workshop is open to all women fifty and older, including those who are just starting their search, those who are currently looking and job seekers wanting new tools and/or inspiration. In order to best benefit from the course, we recommend that you already have in mind one or two jobs that you’re looking for. If you’re still thinking about what type of jobs you’d like to pursue, we recommend our “Discovering Your Career” workshop, which also happens monthly.
